Perhaps UEFA and every national soccer league in Europe should consider putting some stickum on their trophies. That should go a long way in helping them solve their trophy-dropping epidemic.
Last month it was Real Madrid’s Sergio Ramos who dropped the Copa del Rey from the top of the team bus as they drove through the streets of Madrid. This time it was Ajax FC goaltender Maarten Stekelenberg who couldn’t manage to keep a tight grip on the Eredivisie Trophy as his team celebrated the Dutch championship.
Ajax defeated Twente 3-1 on Sunday to move two points ahead of them in the standings on the final weekend, clinching the Netherlands league title. But as they celebrated their first league championship in seven years, the Eredivisie Trophy fell from the roof of the bus and crashed onto the street below after hitting a power line. Luckily, the trophy was able to avoid any serious damage before eventually being retrieved by one lucky fan, who couldn’t resist the temptation to raise the trophy above his head during his unexpected ten seconds of glory.
